Biodynamic Massage

A gentle, nurturing form of body work that supports the body's natural self-regulatory processes and releases held tension, emotional armouring, and blocked energy.

What is Biodynamic Massage?

Biodynamic massage was developed by Norwegian physiotherapist and psychologist Gerda Boyesen in the 1960s. It is a deeply respectful and attuned form of body work that works with the body's own healing intelligence rather than imposing a predetermined agenda.

The approach recognises that emotions and psychological experiences are held not just in the mind but throughout the body — in muscles, fascia, organs, and the nervous system. Biodynamic massage creates conditions in which the body can begin to release these held patterns at its own pace.

I may use a stethoscope to listen to gut sounds during a session — these sounds indicate the body's metabolic processes and can guide the rhythm and depth of the work. This 'psycho-peristalsis' is a central principle of the biodynamic approach.

What to Expect in a Session

Sessions last 60–90 minutes. You will remain clothed or partially clothed, depending on what we agree is appropriate for the work. The massage can range from very light, holding contact to deeper tissue work, always following your body's cues and your comfort.

After a session, many people feel profoundly relaxed, sometimes emotional, and often sleepy. It is advisable to allow time after a session to rest and integrate the experience.
